The free fishing tournament has begun at Elkhead Reservoir and will continue through Sunday June 19th. Anglers in the area can win prizes for catching and removing small mouth bass and northern pike from the lake. The large populations of small mouth bass and northern pike that are present in the reservoir have made it difficult for native fish in the lake to thrive. The tournament will give anglers a role in removing these non native fish species from the lake. Ten fish from each species will be tagged with an electronic identifier, and whoever catches them will be automatically entered to win prizes which include a 16 foot AlumaCraft boat. Fish will be scanned for the ID’s at the tournament station between 8:30am to 5pm each day of the tournament except the final day when scanning will end at 3. The main prizes will be given away after the scanning ends, and additional prizes will be given out for biggest and smallest fish of the day, most fish caught per day and most fish caught for the tournament.
