Peabody Still Owes Nearly $2 Million To Routt County

PEABODYRoutt County residents can get information on the status of Peabody Energy’s delinquent property taxes this week. Routt County Treasurer Brita Horn will host information sessions Wednesday, Thursday and Friday throughout Routt County. Wednesday’s meeting will be held at the Court House in Steamboat beginning at 1:30, followed by another meeting Thursday evening at 6:30 in Yampa at the Yampa Town Hall. The final meeting will be Friday evening in Hayden at the Hayden Town Hall beginning at 6:30. According to Horn, these sessions will be a good opportunity for the public to ask questions about taxes, treasurer deeds, and bankruptcies. Peabody Energy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April, and last month, the company failed to come up with the funds necessary to pay the nearly $2 million dollars it owes to Routt County in overdue property taxes. After they missed the payment, Horn offered Peabody a payment plan that will allow them to reconcile the delinquent taxes.
