Wild Earth Guardians Attempting to Block Expansion of Deserado Mine

wildearthThe Wild Earth Guardians have filed a lawsuit hoping to halt the expansion of the Deserado Coal Mine in Rio Blanco County.  The Wild Earth Guardians are pushing the EPA to set a precedent by requiring the Bonanza Power Plant, owned by Deseret Power, to upgrade the plant with the latest clean air technology.  The cost would be somewhere around $200 million, and would put the plant and the coal mine out of business.  That is clearly Wild Earth’s goal, as they also opposed the expansion during the Environmental Statement portion of the expansion plan.  However, the BLM ruled the expansion could go forward.  Upgrading power plant technology has never been a component of the expansion of a coal mine, and appears to be a desperate, last-ditch effort to shut the mine down.  The towns of Rangely and Vernal are letting their residents know about a couple of upcoming meetings to discuss the lawsuit and a plan of action.  The meetings will be held June 3rd at the Ute Tribal Auditorium in Fort Duchesne, Utah.  Club 20 will have a presence there.  The Rangely School District and Colorado Northwestern Community College have agreed to provide buses to the Auditorium.  For more information you can call the Town of Rangely at 675-4324.
