Udall Wants More Wilderness Areas

mark-udall-300Senator Mark Udall is praising a process that has locked up thousands of acres of Colorado land indefinitely.  Udall is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act – which has been used to lock up land in many areas of the state, including Moffat County.  There are nearly a dozen proposed wilderness areas in Moffat County.  Those proposals have been on the table for over 30 years.  While they don’t carry the title of Wilderness, they bring all the protections of an area designated Wilderness.  Lawmakers and local elected officials have tried for years to get some of those lands released, even proposing land trades at times, but to no avail.  Udall is now not only praising that process, but proposing more Wilderness areas in Colorado.  He has a proposal that will affect land in San Miguel, Ouray, and San Juan Counties, and one that affects land in Summit, Eagle and Pitkin Counties.  Udall is up for re-election this year.  Pictured:  Mark Udall
