Yesterday’s community outreach meeting hosted by the Office of Surface Mining and Trapper Mine was well attended. The two entities displayed a large amount of information describing how each operation works in general, along with specific information about the settlement with environmental groups. A judge ruled that the Environmental Assessment for Trapper’s operations was insufficient, and a settlement was reached for conducting a new one. That assessment must be complete by April 30th, and the OSM is accepting public comment until November 12th. An OSM spokesman said, while the public comment period actually started last week, this was the first chance for community members to have questions answered before submitting those comments. Representatives passed out informational material and comment forms. Those that didn’t make it to yesterday’s meeting can still submit a comment online.
