Today is the final day for the public to make comments on the environmental assessment performed by the Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation on the Trapper mine. The assessment was performed in response to a lawsuit that was brought on by the WildEarth Guardians. The Trapper Mine has been recognized nationally for its environmental consciousness and reclamation programs so it is likely that the assessment will find that there will be no significant impact to the environment. However, the public’s comments will play a large part in the approval assessment, so it is important that a sufficient amount of comments are made. At a public meeting to discuss the EA, Rick Gordon Chairman of the Tri-State Board of Directors reiterated this fact stating that the citizens’ participation will be crucial for the success of the project.
