A Routt County jury convicted Thomas Johnson Saturday, of Murder in the First Degree, for killing Lori Bases in Steamboat Springs in May of 2000. This was Johnson’s third trial and conviction for the murder. His two prior convictions were overturned on appeal. The jury declined to find Johnson guilty of additional charges of First Degree Criminal Trespass and Criminal Mischief for the vandalism of Bases’ vehicle in April of 2000. The verdict followed a 13 day trial in a Routt County District Court. The jury deliberated only 95 minutes. Bases died after Johnson stabbed her over 20 times. Following the verdict, District Judge Michael O’Hara immediately sentenced Johnson to life in prison without possibility of parole.
