Office of Surface Mining Comment Collection Meeting

Those planning to go to the Office of Surface Mining’s meeting this afternoon in Craig won’t be given an opportunity to comment on an open microphone. Instead, those that show up will be able to talk to individual representatives on a more intimate level, about the issues surrounding ColoWyo Mine. There will be stations residents can visit to submit their comments, which the OSM will use in their Environmental Assessment of the South Taylor Pit. A federal judge has ordered the office to complete the assessment within 120 days of his ruling, or he has threatened to pull the permit for the pit. That would leave 220 employees without jobs, and the local annual economy would take a roughly $200 million hit. Public comments are due by Monday. If you can’t make it to this afternoon’s meeting, which will take place from 4 to 8 in the Grandstands Building of the Moffat County Fairgrounds, you can fill out a public comment form online which you’ll find on the front page at KRAI.COM.
