Twelve-year-old Ashley Jessen of Craig and 11-year-old Jon Reed of Ft. Collins were the lucky winners of a mentored turkey hunt near Craig, May 3rd and 4th. Offered through Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Hunter Outreach program, both young novices had a great time learning all about the art of hunting gobblers from agency officers and volunteers. Jessen and Reed not only learned about the birds, wildlife management and the ethics and traditions of hunting, they both bagged their first turkey with the help of their expert mentors. As part of a supervised orientation, the young hunters first learned a few basics about turkey biology and the history of the species in Colorado. They then visited the Bear’s Ears Range where they learned how to pattern their shotguns while practicing the safe use of firearms under the supervision of their mentors. Using the tips, tricks and techniques learned from their mentors, both young hunters were able to harvest their first turkeys. They then learned how to properly clean their bird and even got a few cooking tips from their guides. For more information about the Hunter Outreach Program, click here.
