Friday Fire North Of Craig

IMG_5547 IMG_5531A wildfire next to Highway 13, twelve miles north of Craig was quickly extinguished late Friday morning. The fire was believed to have been caused by sparks from a flat tire. The BLM, Moffat County Sheriff’s Department and the Craig Fire Department responded and contained the blaze to around a half acre. Photos from the fire courtesy of Doug Slaight.

One Hospitalized in Motorcycled Accident

Bitter Creek Fire Burns 700 Acres in Moffat County

The Bitter Creek Fire consumed about 700 acres of private and BLM land before it was contained Saturday afternoon. The blaze was located near the Bitter Brush State Wildlife Area. Mining Will Continue at Colowyo – Assessment Filed

coalThe Interior Department’s Environmental Assessment of the South Taylor Pit of Colowyo Mine was signed by Assistant Secretary of the Interior Janice Schneider and has been officially filed. Moffat County Commissioner Chuck Grobe said he received a phone call from Janice Snyder of the Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) to let him know that the timely filing fulfills the order by U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson, who gave the Office of Surface Mining 120 days to bring the permit into compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The new assessment shows that the mine’s operations do NOT create a significant environmental impact. The filing brings to a close the events that lead to the fear in Northwest Colorado that mining operations at Colowyo would cease, put 220 miners out of work and devastate local economies.

Cancer Drive Raises over $11,500

upchurchA recent event in Craig, featuring former Denver Broncos players, raised over $11,500 dollars the local fight against cancer. A check was presented to the Moffat County Cancer Society yesterday. The drive took place from July 21st to the 25th, and was led by staff at Victory Motors in Craig, along with former Denver Broncos Rick Upchurch, Le Lo Lang, Dave Studdard, Ron Egloff, and Rob Bundy.
