Sweetwater County Can’t Pick Up At Large Animals

Due to budgetary issues, The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s office will no longer be picking up at large dogs and cats in the county. The county is now down to a single animal control officer responsible for covering 10,000 square miles of land. According to Sheriff Mike Lowell, the county handled just under 700 animal calls in 2016, and so far this year they have received around 500 calls of this nature.  If an animal is vicious or poses a threat of any kind, it will be impounded, but the county no longer has the resources to impound simple strays. As a result of recent budget cuts, the Sheriff’s Office has lost 11 positions and $1,500,000 in funding.
