State Tracking Licenses Issued to Illegal Immigrants

licenseOnly about half of Colorado’s illegal immigrants trying to get driver’s licenses or identification cards have managed to get documents during the first two weeks of a new law. Data from the state revenue department also shows that about 10 percent of illegal immigrants who make appointments are not showing up. The state began issuing the identification cards to all immigrants, whether they were in the country legally or not, August 1st. Through Wednesday, the state scheduled 1,395 appointments. Of those, 733 resulted in licenses, driving permits, or identification cards being issued. Another 523 did not receive any documents because they failed exams, didn’t have the proper paperwork, or other reasons. State officials say they’re still analyzing the data. Meanwhile, immigrant advocates want the state to have more than five offices handling appointments to meet high demand.
