In the early morning hours of August 15th, a crash involving two vehicles occurred on Interstate 80, 14 miles east of Walcott Junction. A van being driven by 35 year old Peter Bernardini of Chicago was traveling in front of a semi, driven by 57 year old Aleksandr Barabin of Portland, Oregon. For an unknown reason, the semi struck the van from behind. The collision caused the van to spin out of control, leave the road, trip and roll several times coming to rest on it’s tires facing back to the east. Barabin pulled off the road and stopped several hundred feet from where the crash occurred. 28-year old Ethan Jones of Chicago was a passenger in the van. Jones was transported by ambulance to the Carbon County Hospital. Bernardini was flown by helicopter from the scene to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. On August 20th, Bernardini died from injuries sustained in the crash. Driver fatigue by Barabin is being investigated as the contributing factor in the crash. Barabin has been charged with reckless driving, following too close and for a violation of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Rules for an hours of service violation.
