The Moffat County School Board unanimously approved a recommendation from the Blythe Group at a meeting last night, to close East Elementary at the end of the school year. The Blythe group analyzed the advantages of each of the Elementary schools in Craig and determined closing East would be the best decision for the district. Five fewer elementary teachers will be needed after the school is closed, bringing the total to 41. The closure will require the district to add an additional bus to transport students to their new school. Two people, who were concerned over things like large class sizes and what the closure said about the quality of the school system in Moffat County, made public comments during the meeting. The Blythe group says that after the closure, class sizes will still conform to school district requirements, with fewer than 30 students in each class. Before the vote was taken, board member Chris Thome said the closure will allow the district to improve the quality of education at the remaining schools.
