Craig Police are warning area residents of a new scam where crooks are altering their phone number to make it look like their call is coming from the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector Generals hotline. Scammers are using the number which is 1-800-447-8477 to acquire personal information from victims, which could be used to drain their bank accounts. Department of Health and Human Services wants the public to know that the hotline will never be used to make outgoing calls and individuals should never answer calls from 1-800-447-8477. Anyone who believe they may have been a victim of the telephone spoofing scam is encouraged to report that information through the HHS OIG Hotline 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477) or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Individuals may also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
