Routt County commissioners are trying to figure out how to pay for the rising cost of widening the runway at Yampa Valley Regional Airport. Airport manager Dave Ruppel says the lowest bid is $13 million, which is $4 million over budget. Officials blame the increased cost of gravel. Suppliers told contractors the airport would need so much gravel, it would hurt other customers. Commissioners are hoping the Federal Aviation Administration will help figure out a way to pay for it. The project includes tearing up the old asphalt and replacing it while widening the runway by 50 feet. Taxiways will be widened along with aprons to handle more air traffic.
