The business community has started lobbying Governor John Hickenlooper to do what he can to keep the Greater Sage Grouse off the Endangered Species List. A letter asking as much was had delivered to the governor last week. It was reportedly signed by 17 Routt County businesses, and underscored the importance of the bird to the Western Slope. At the same time, the signatories do not want to see the bird listed, due to the economic hardships it would place on the county. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is scheduled to make their decision on the potential listing in September. Many feel that listing the Gunnison Sage Grouse was a precursor to a listing for the Greater Sage Grouse. The letter calls on Hickenlooper to put in place whatever conservation measures would keep the listing from happening.
