Rio Blanco County Suspends Drilling Fees

oil-and-gas-drilling-300Rio Blanco County Commissioners are suspending oil drilling impact fees until February of next year as production slows from 42 wells last year to eight in the first four months of 2015. The county created the fees when it hit a peak of 200 wells drilled in 2008, and low gas prices and overburdensome federal regulations have contributed to the decline. The fee can range from almost $11,000 for a shallow well to just under $18,000 for a deeper one. Commissioner Shawn Bolton says they hope eliminating the fees for the oil, housing and other development industries will encourage investment in the county. Bolton said the fees could be eliminated permanently.
