Off-Duty Firefighters Assist Choking Patron at Restaurant in Steamboat

STEAMBOAT FIRE RESCUEOff-duty Firefighters Paul Gilbertson and Tony DeRisio potentially saved the life of an eighty year old female at Café Diva in Steamboat yesterday. Both Firefighters and their spouses were at Café Diva for the date night special when Gilbertson noticed a female choking at a nearby table. He immediately went to render assistance and started performing the Heimlich maneuver. Unable to breathe the female went unconscious. At this point DeRisio began to assist and with continued Heimlich maneuvers the food was dislodged and the female began to breathe again. During this time bystanders called 911 and Steamboat Fire Rescue was dispatched to the scene. The female patient was transported by ambulance to Yampa Valley Medical Center in Good Condition.
