Rumors are rampant that the Obama Administration wants to designate Vermillion Basin as a National Monument. The issue was brought up at the Moffat County Commissioners meeting yesterday. According to David Boyd, a Public Affairs Specialist with the Bureau of Land Management, Commissioner Chuck Grobe had previous asked the BLM’s Northwest Colorado Resource Advisory Council to draw up a resolution or letter requesting Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewel, to use the public process when considering whether or not designate Vermillion Basin as a National Monument. Boyd said that at the next Northwest Colorado Resource Advisory Council meeting in August, the committee will be reminded of Grobe’s question and will decide at that time if they will act at a future meeting on Grobe’s request. Wild West Radio news had incorrectly stated that the Northwest Colorado Resource Advisory Council had already agreed to send a resolution or letter to Secretary Jewel which is not the case, although the Moffat County Commissioners do plan to send a letter to Secretary Jewel to express their opposition to any designation that does not first go through the public process.
