If you have trees that need pruning now is the time to do it because pruning your trees late in their dormant season reduces impacts on the tree’s health. Here are some steps to take to ensure you are properly pruning your trees. Know what you want to accomplish before you saw, and don’t remove branches without a reason. The branches that should be targeted for removal are those that are torn, dead or broken. Limit pruning of new trees by only removing dead, damaged or crossing limbs. Avoid removing more than 25 percent of a tree’s branches in any one year, and never cut off the top of the tree. For a comprehensive list of proper pruning techniques, click here.
