HICKENLOOPER HIGHLIGHTS 2014 SESSION AGENDA

JOHN-HICKENLOOPER-300A year after saying “the time is right” for a gun-control debate, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper is laying out a much more modest agenda for 2014.  The Democratic governor earlier this year signed into law a package of gun-control measures including expanded background checks and a 15-round limit on ammunition magazines.  Those laws resulted in secession questions appearing on eleven rural County ballots during the last election.  In an end-of-year talk with reporters yesterday, Hickenlooper says he doesn’t want to see any of those laws repealed. But he told reporters he’d consider tweaks to some of them, without specifying what changes he’d agree to.  The governor announced no major new initiatives. He said he hopes next session is marked by bipartisanship. That’s an unlikely outcome as Hickenlooper seeks re-election and Republicans are within a single seat of controlling the state Senate.  Pictured: John Hickenlooper

C-DOT SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON STATEWIDE TRANSPORTATION PLAN

C-DOTWith the unveiling of the Statewide Plan website, C-DOT is inviting the public to play a major role developing the Statewide Transportation Plan (SWP), set for release in mid-2014.  The plan will guide C-DOT on how limited dollars will be invested in the transportation system and how projects will be selected and scheduled in the future.  For that reason, officials say they want to hear from the public about which projects are most important.  The website serves as a central point of contact for CDOT, its planning partners and the public at large.  Website visitors will see what opportunities and challenges are facing the state’s transportation system. It allows the public to provide comments and take on-line surveys and examine the financial practices and organizational policies used by CDOT to stretch resources and meet statewide needs. In addition, local planning processes, upcoming events and data on the state’s economy, environment and transportation system is available on the site.  You can link to the site by clicking here.

FUNDRAISER TOMORROW TO HELP COUPLE WHO LOST HOUSE TO FIRE

Fundraiser-300A Skate and Soup fundraiser will be held tomorrow in Craig, to help out a family that had their house burn earlier this month.  Steve and Tracy Lathrop’s home was destroyed after it caught fire while Steve was trying to thaw pipes underneath the home with a propane torch.  A bank account has been set up for the Lathrops at Bank of the west, to help them get reestablished.  Tomorrow’s fundraiser will feature skating and soup that can be purchased, with the proceeds going to that fund.  It runs from 1 to 4 tomorrow at Loudy Simpson Ice Arena.  For more information you can call 620-6490.

STEAMBOAT WANTS PUBLIC INPUT ON NEW POLICE LOCATION

City-of-SteamboatThe City of Steamboat is planning for a new police station, and they’re seeking the public’s input on where to put it.  The city has set up a website where people can vote for potential sites for the facility.  While on the site, you can learn about the history of the currrent facility, how the city is picking a new site, the pros and cons of each of the potential sites, and a map.  Link to the site by clicking here.

MSHA COMPLETES NATIONWIDE INSPECTION OF COAL MINES

MSHA-300The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration announced that federal inspectors issued 174 citations, 11 orders and two safeguards during special impact inspections conducted at 12 coal mines nationwide in November. In October, MSHA conducted impact inspections at six coal mines and three metal and nonmetal mines, where inspectors issued 120 citations and 10 orders. Impact inspections were curtailed during part of October due to the government shutdown.  The monthly inspections, which began in force in April 2010 following the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine, involve mines that merit increased agency attention and enforcement due to their poor compliance history or particular compliance concerns.  The report shows no citations issued at Northwest Colorado mines.
