Moffat County Balloon Fest Takes Flight This Weekend

Organizers of the annual Moffat County Hot Air Balloon Festival are finalizing their efforts to take the event to new heights this weekend.  With the addition of a pancake breakfast Saturday morning and beer garden Saturday afternoon being the two most notable additions, there will also be a substantially larger number of arts and craft and retail booths; and a superior variety of food vendors on hand beginning at 9am.  Chainsaw woodcarvers will be creating works of art during the day, and once completed the finished artwork will be available for purchase.  Just-for-fun activities will include a pie eating and kite flying contests, and activities specifically for kids.  Following the rousing success of last years addition of live music, a free concert featuring the Elton John tribute band “Bennie and The Jets” will rock the park Saturday night beginning at 6.  That will be followed by the Balloon Glow, where the hot air balloons will be lit from the inside creating a collage of beautiful colors.  If you would like to watch the hot air balloons launch, plan to be at there by 6 either Saturday or Sunday morning.  All activities will be held at Loudy-Simpson Park south of Craig all day Saturday and Sunday morning this weekend.  Admission to the Fest is free, although you are encouraged to bring a donation of canned food for the Craig Community Kitchen.  Follow this link for more information about the Moffat County Hot Air Balloon Festival, including a video from “Bennie and the Jets” and photos from last years event.  Pictured: Greg Ransom as “Elton John” in Bennie and the Jets.

No One Injured in Wyoming Crash

Wyoming’s Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a one-vehicle crash that landed a half-overturned pickup in the yard of a residence.  According to Sheriff Rich Haskell, 18 year old Hayley Fennell was driving a 2001 Ford pickup accompanied by a 15-year-old passenger. Fennell said her sandal became caught on the accelerator and as a result of her efforts to free it, the crash occurred causing her vehicle to strike several concrete poles and sending the pickup airborne where it finally crashed into a residence.  Both Fennell and her passenger were examined at the scene by ambulance personnel and released. No one was at the residence at the time of the crash. Fennell was cited for no seat belt, speeding too fast for conditions, and failure to maintain lane of travel.  Authorities said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Both the Fennell vehicle and the home were extensively damaged.  Pictured: The aftermath of the accident. Photo courtesy of the Sweetwater Sheriff’s Dept.
