TIPTON SPEAKS AT HARVEST OF CAPITAL CHRISTMAS TREE

Congressman Scott Tipton (CO-03) spoke at the harvest of the 2012 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree today. In his speech, Tipton talked about what a privilege it is to have Colorado representation at the nation’s capital.  He also used the opportunity to speak about needed wildfire mitigation in forests.  The tree was harvested from the White River National Forest near Meeker, and will be brought to Meeker for a celebration today before embarking on a tour through Colorado and then across the country as it makes its way to Washington.  Everyone is invited to today’s celebration in Meeker.  The festivities kick-off at 2.  The tree will start its trip to Washington D.C. Tuesday, with its first stop in Rangely, where residents can see it at the Ballfields on River Road and Bell from 9 to 11.  From there it will move on to Craig, where it can be viewed between Kim & Go East and the fairgrounds on Highway 40 from 1:30 to 2:30.  Then the tree will be driven to Howelson Rodeo Grounds in Steamboat, where it will be available for viewing between 6 and 8.

GROUP SAYS HICKENLOOPERS PROPOSED BUDGET LEAVES KEY ELEMENTS OUT

Governor John Hickenlooper’s proposal for the state budget would begin restoring some of the cuts from recent years that have harmed state services. That’s according to the Colorado Center On Law and Policy.  But they say his spending plan for the year that begins July 1st does not address a couple of major issues that will certainly face lawmakers as they begin deliberating over the 2013-14 budget later this month.  The budget proposed by Hickenlooper would total $20.3 billion and would be a little more than $1 billion, or 5.4 percent, larger than the current budget.  But major changes to the budget are still possible, if not likely. Omitted from the budget proposal are two issues that are certain to become part of the mix as the General Assembly considers amendments: scheduled federal budget cuts and the expansion of Medicaid. In addition, Congress could enact some form of federal tax reform that could directly affect state revenue, perhaps in a positive way.

FOREST SERVICE/BLM TO HOLD FREE DAY FOR VETERANS

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and National Park Service (NPS) announced they will be waiving entrance and usage fees at most of their day-use recreation sites over the Veterans Day holiday weekend, November 10-12. The agencies are encouraging Coloradans to take advantage of the fee waiver to experience some of Colorado’s pristine public lands.  The fee waivers are offered in cooperation with other federal agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. Concessionaire operated day-use sites may be included in the waiver if the permit holder wishes to participate.
