The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new scam targeting people in the area. People have received phone calls from scammers who claim to be part of the Sheriff’s office who are soliciting donations. The callers, who have been male and female, seem to be targeting senior citizens. They have called and asked for donations, usually around $150, to go towards the benefit of law enforcement officers. When the victim agrees to donate, they then ask for their credit card information. Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell says the department will never make calls to solicit donations over the phone. If you receive a call of this nature, hang up, and report it immediately to local law enforcement.
