It’s possible that voters in Colorado may see issues concerning oil and gas development on the ballot this November. Supporters of two Initiatives turned in their petitions to the Secretary of Sate yesterday. Both initiatives seek to stop or limit oil and gas development in the state by amending the Colorado constitution. Initiative 75 would move authority over oil and gas operations from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Committee to local authorities. Initiative 78 would extend the 500-foot buffer zone around oil and gas operations to 2,500 feet. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission produced a study that showed that if 78 is voted to become an amendment to the constitution, 90% of the surface area of the state would be prohibited from new drilling and activity. The Secretary of State has until September 7th to certify the signatures on the petitions.
