Moffat County is eligible to receive over $11,000 in scholarships to hand out to students within the county. Starting this fall, the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) will make $7 million in matching dollars available to communities with the intention of increasing the availability of scholarship dollars around the state. Moffat County’s share is $11,210. The amount is determined by the number of free-and-reduced lunch students the county serves. Moffat County Commissioner John Kinkaid said at Monday’s meeting that distribution of the funds has changed, as the state would now like counties to act as a pass-through. In return, counties are allowed to keep 5% of the funds. Kinkaid says he can’t imagine a situation where the county would keep that money, and he would suggest the entire amount passes on to the recipients of the scholarships.
