Moffat County Commissioners Will Meet With Interior Secretary Jewel This Week

JEWELLMoffat County Commissioners will meet with Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewel this Friday.  That according to Commissioner John Kinkaid.  Jewell will be in Aspen Friday to speak as part of the Aspen Institute’s Hurst Lecture Series.  The Commissioners, who will meet with Jewel in Glenwood Spring at 8pm, are expected to impress onthe Secretary their concerns as to whether or not the Interior Department’s Office of Surface Mining will adequately complete the redoing of an environmental assessment of the South Taylor Pit at ColoWyo. A federal judge in Denver ruled the original assessment didn’t do enough to consider the effects of burning coal on the environment and insisted the assessment be redone to his satisfaction or he would shut down mining operations.  Jewell dealt a blow to the mine’s chances last week by declining to file an appeal in the case. In a statement, an Interior spokeswoman said that the department is confident it can finish the court-ordered environmental review by the September 6th deadline.  Pictured: Sally Jewel
