An amendment that would force the federal government to return tens of millions of dollars collected from oil and gas leases in Northwest Colorado was introduced earlier this week in the US senate. The amendment was co sponsored by Colorado US Senators Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner. The Oil and gas revenues were collected by the national government to pay for the cleanup of the Anvil Points federal oil shale research site near rifle which ended in 2013. Since the clean-up ended, millions of dollars more were collected that should have been distributed to areas in Northwest Colorado in accordance with the Mineral Leasing Act. The amendment would close a loop hole that has prevented the return of those funds and would allow the money to come back in to Northwest Colorado. According to Bennett, Colorado communities have waited too long for this money that should have already been returned to help local economies.
