Former Craig Doctor Joel Miller, who was convicted in November of over-prescribing opiates to his patients, was sentenced to prison Friday. Miller received a five year prison sentence along with three years of supervised probation. The sentence resulted from charges that he prescribed drugs without a medical reason. He had also been charged with causing the the death of one of his patients. 44-year-old Shelly Volkmar of Craig who died in 2010 from an overdose of fentanyl, a drug that was prescribed to her by Dr. Miller. That charge against Miller was dropped after the trial due to a mistake made by the US Attorneys Office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office was initially seeking a 20-year sentence for Miller but due to the dropped charge could only ask for a 10-year sentence on the remaining lesser counts. Miller practiced medicine in Craig from 2008 to 2012 when his license was revoked.
