A rescue team was called in to assist a skier east of Vail Monday night, who reportedly had been trying to hike to safety for several hours, after falling off a trail in the area. The rescued man, who has not been identified, did not tell authorities he had been up in the backcountry with another person, as he believed his friend had gotten out on his own. However, the rescued man called the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office the following day to report the friend who had accompanied him the day before, had not returned and may also be lost in the backcountry. A rescue team responded the area of the original rescue, where they located a male body. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Samuel Failla, of New Jersey. The cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
