Lawmakers Grappling Over Police Oversight

co-state-capitol-300Several Colorado bills to give police more oversight are running into opposition at the Legislature. A Colorado House committee changed course Thursday on a bill to order police departments to repay people wrongfully charged of the vague crime of “violating a lawful order.” The Democratic committee earlier voted in favor of the bill but decided to reject it because of confusion over what the bill would have done. The same committee was working late into the evening Thursday before approving a bill to expand the existing prohibition against profiling by a peace officer. A third bill limits the police use of chokeholds, banning the practice except in self-defense.
