KRAI News for Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020

It’s been another smoky week in Northwest Colorado with smoke rolling into the Yampa Valley from the Middle Fork Fire. Around 9,000 acres have burned in Routt National Forest, which is closed. Mo Demorat with Routt County Office of Emergency Management says there could be some precipitation on Sunday, with cooler temperatures in the mid 40s.

A new incident command team took control of the Middle Fork Fire Tuesday, under the direction of Kelly Boyd. Sixty-one people are working it.

The Mullen Fire is burning 27 miles to the northeast of the Middle Fork Fire. It’s in Colorado and Wyoming and has now burned over 152,000 acres, and is just 14 percent contained. There are evacuation orders for parts of Jackson County.

Check PurpleAir.com to get a measurement of the air quality. In Walden, it was over 300 today, which means health warnings of emergency conditions if exposed for 24 hours. Air sensors are in Meeker, Rangely, Oak Creek, Steamboat, and North Routt.

The Elks Lodge #1577 in Craig is working on decorating the military headstones at Fairview Cemetery. They’re trying to raise enough money to put wreaths on the headstones of 800 veterans. It’s part of the Wreaths Across America program. Those pitching in money to help so far include the Elks Lodge, VFW, American Legion, and Masterworks Mechanical. Call the Craig Elks Lodge to find out how to donate. And there’s a link to donate on our website.

Speaking of the Routt County Fairgrounds, the restrooms and showers there have been closed during COVID but County Commissioners have given their approval for them to re-open. Fairgrounds manager Jill Delay says it’s a big deal.

Fairground staff will do a deep cleaning on Monday and disinfect Tuesday through Friday. The fairground restrooms will still be closed on the weekends.

A message From Routt County Public Health…  Wear your mask and remember to social distance; help make COVID stop with you.
