Huge amounts of smoke can be seen in Northwest Colorado. It’s a flareup from the Silver Creek Fire, north of Kremmling, and about four miles from Highway 40. Calls started coming in Wednesday afternoon, with people thinking it was on Rabbit Ears Pass. Mo Demorat is the director of the Routt County Office of Emergency Management.

Fire officials knew it could happen as most of Western Colorado is under a red flag warning, which means conditions are ideal for a fire.

Hunters and campers near Forest Service Road 100 have been evacuated. More evacuations and closures are expected to happen.

Two water improvement projects were approved by Craig City Council this week. A new Sensus water meter reading system is an upgrade from the 20-year-old system currently in use. The upgrade in technology and software will cost just over $55,000. ($55,037)

Council also voted to approve a design bid for just under $430,000 ($428,457) for a new chloramine secondary disinfection system. It treats the water and makes sure the city is in compliance with regulations. The bid was awarded to SGM Inc. based in Glenwood Springs.

A grief education and support group starts at 5:30 this Tuesday, and runs every Tuesday through Oct. 16. It’s called “Facing the Mourning,” and it’s hosted by Northwest Colorado Health, at their Yampa Avenue office. It’s open to anyone who may have lost a friend or loved one. A new drone program is being offered as a class at Colorado Northwestern Community College, on both the Craig and Rangely campuses. It’s called AVT 160, or Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems. It’s one of three drone classes the college plans to offer.

The JV golf team at Moffat County High School is headed to play in Dillon today, at the Keystone Ranch Golf Course.

The Moffat County High School JV football team is off to Rifle for a game on Monday. The JV squad is 2-0, after a big victory over the Steamboat Sailors Monday, 54-8. The Bulldogs also shut out Frisco, 21-0, the week before.

The Bulldog Varsity football team is in Edwards Friday night, to play the Battle Mountain Huskies. That game starts at 7 and you can listen to the action on KRAI.

The Craig Middle School volleyball team is playing Baggs, Wyo., at 5 p.m. today, at home. Steamboat will be in Craig tomorrow at 4 to play the middle school team.

The local cross country teams are in Gypsum for the Eagle Valley Invitational this weekend. While the local rodeo teams are competing in Grand Junction.
