The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners have passed a resolution saying they formally oppose Proposition 112. It’s an oil and gas setback measure that’s on the November ballot. Commissioner Ray Beck says Proposition 112 would hurt Colorado’s energy sector, adding that Colorado already has some of the toughest rules and regulations governing energy developers. The Craig Press reports that both Democrats and Republicans have announced their opposition to the proposition.

A rafting guide from Rifle died Monday in a rollover accident on a four-wheel drive road north of Glenwood Springs. 25-year-old Ethan Taylor was also an outdoor adventurer and performance artist. His car went off the road on a curve and rolled down an embankment. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, and he was ejected.

The rain has been a welcome relief to the hot and dry weather. Because of the wet weather, pre-evacuation notices have been lifted for several homes and communities along Highway 40 because of the Silver Creek Fire.  In Rio Blanco County, the U.S. Drought Monitor says the county is still classified as D3, or Extreme Drought. But the National Weather Services’ Climate Prediction Center is predicting an El Nino winter, which means at least near normal precipitation in northwest Colorado in late fall, winter, and spring.

The ARToberfest art exhibition starts tomorrow. It’s the first year for the event. A diverse group of local artists are displaying a wide range of artworks from painting to music. They are trying to raise awareness of art in the local economy. The exhibition is at 80 E. Fourth Street, starting at 4 Friday afternoon, and then from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The artists will be there to talk about their artwork.

The CNCC soccer team has had to forfeit both of its scheduled games this week. Too many players are academically ineligible. Coach Doug Seigle says many of his players this year are freshmen. They need to learn to balance their schoolwork with their soccer time. The games were against Utah State University Eastern and they were scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Craig.

In more sports, the Moffat County High School soccer team hosts Delta this afternoon at 4, while the middle school football team is off to Saratoga, Wyoming.
