Craig Fire/Rescue was called to a fire at the Frontier Apartments last night. The Craig Press reports that firefighters were working on the second floor, breaking windows and trying to put the fire out. No one was hurt and first responders say the fire was an accident caused by unattended cooking.
Vanessa Jenkins has pleaded guilty to Criminally Negligent Homicide, which is a class 5 felony. Jenkins was charged in a fire last Christmas Eve, which killed her three-year-old son, Lane Cullen. Law enforcement and the District Attorney’s office said Jenkins negligently and unreasonably placed the child in a situation that resulted in his death. Jenkins will be sentenced on February 10, in Moffat County District Court.
A Wyoming man was arrested earlier this month on multiple charges, from what police describe as a jealous feud with an ex-lover. 30-year-old Xavier Martin Funk is from Green River. He is facing felony assault and burglary charges. His next court date is at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Moffat County courtroom 2M.
A fight broke out in the Moffat County Jail earlier this week. 39-year-old Christopher Dale McCarthy is from Wamsutter, Wyo. The Craig Press reports that McCarthy approached some inmates when going to get his breakfast at the jail. Then he allegedly sucker punched another inmate, who had to go to the hospital. McCarthy was thrown into a holding cell where he told the lieutenant he “punched the wrong guy.” McCarthy was re-arrested while inside the Moffat County Jail and is charged with a felony of second-degree assault.
The airport in Hayden has received a $1.5 million dollar federal grant that will help pay for an expansion in the terminal. The money helps with an overall $3.3 miilion dollar expansion project. Airport Manager Kevin Booth says the new space will reduce congestion, increase capacity, and improve the flow of travelers getting to their planes. FCI Constructors out of Grand Junction will be awarded the contract and will oversee construction. Work is set to start in the spring.
The City of Craig has been awarded a $200,000 regional solar utility/garden project grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs grant program. The Craig Press reports it will help local groups investigate potential solar installations in the region.
Colorado Parks are free to get in this Friday for #FreshAir Friday. Visitors to any of the 41 state parks can get in free to spend some time outside. The state parks in Northwest Colorado are Stagecoach, Pearl Lake and Steamboat Lake, Yampa River State Park east of Hayden, and Elkhead Reservoir.

The Parade of Lights is Saturday in downtown Craig. It’s from 6-8 p.m. It starts at Craig Middle School and heads down Yampa Ave., before turning left on Victory Way and then Ledford Street. Some local businesses will have hot chocolate. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be making a visit. And KRAI will be playing holiday music, courtesy of King Homes and Land Realty, and Ashley Ellis at Farm Bureau Insurance in Craig.
