Craig Mayor John Ponikvar is running for re-election. The incumbent mayor has announced his candidacy for a second term in the upcoming city election, which will be in April.

State Representative Bob Rankin has been chosen to replace the empty seat of state senator Randy Baumgardner. The decision was made by the Vacancy Committee for the Republican 8th Senate District, which is what Baumgardner represented. That includes Moffat, Routt, Rio Blanco, Summit, Jackson, Grand, and Garfield Counties. Rankin’s nomination was finalized on the fourth ballot. The committee met at the Moffat County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Craig Wednesday.

Craig Fire Rescue was called to Timberglen Apartments Wednesday. Apparently someone tried to use a heat gun to unfreeze some pipes on the outside of an apartment. The boiler room caught on fire. The resident was able to put the fire out, but firefighters checked also when they got there.

If you’re planning on taking some turns on one of the ski areas in Colorado, be aware of the prices. Vail and Beaver Creek have broken the 200-dollar mark for one day of skiing. The price for a walk-up window ticket is $209 per day. The cost at one of Aspen’s four mountains is $179 at the window. Over in Utah, Deer Valley is just a bit higher at $180. In Steamboat, a one-day ticket will cost you $179 also. But then there is Howelsen Hill, also in Steamboat, right downtown. The cost for a one-day ticket for an adult is $25. But on Sundays, it’s free. You can ski or snowboard on the slopes of Howelsen for free, courtesy of the City of Steamboat Springs. If you do go this Sunday, or any Sunday this season, go into the base lodge and get a ticket first from the concession stand, and there will be no charge.
