KRAI News for Monday, March 15, 2021

The big spring storm predicted for Colorado brought a few flakes to us here in the Yampa Valley over the weekend. The heavier snow on the Front Range brought strong winds to Northwest Colorado. They were clocked at 60 mph at the top of Steamboat Resort Saturday morning, delaying the opening of the gondola and some of the lifts early that morning. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast for Craig this week, with some snow in Steamboat. Then more rain and snow will be back in Craig on Sunday.

While some moisture is expected, water users should still plan on drought conditions this summer, according to the latest projections from the US Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). February was good but hydrologists are still projecting below-average streamflows throughout the state, mainly due to dry soil moisture conditions and low base river flows. The Colorado and Yampa-White River basins are the only basins in the state with above average reservoir storage.

Two cases of the more contagious United Kingdom strain of the COVID-19 virus were confirmed last week in Moffat County. Both cases are within the same family. Moffat County Public Health Medical Officer Dr. Allan Reishus says the best way to avoid getting COVID right now is to get the vaccine.
