A Steamboat Springs Police Officer has been arrested in an alleged domestic violence incident. Fabian Avitia joined the Steamboat Springs Police Department in December, and he faces four misdemeanor charges. The Routt County Sheriff’s Office is helping with the investigation. Avitia has been put on administrative leave.

Another person has died in Colorado’s rivers. A man from Boulder died after paddle boarding on the Arkansas River in Buena Vista. He is at least the eighth person to die this year in Colorado’s rivers, which are running high with snow melt.

The Colorado Cruisers Car Club has their monthly meeting Tuesday. It’s at 6:30 at the O.P. Bar & Grill. The cars will be cruising in the VFW 4th of July Parade on Thursday. Line up at 10 a.m. and the parade starts at 11 a.m. The Show ‘n Shine Car Show is after the parade at the VFW.

An endowment fund has been set up to support wilderness areas in Routt County. It’s for Friends of Wilderness, and it has been set up at the Yampa Valley Community Foundation.

Opera Steamboat has been awarded a grant by OPERA America to produce a new opera. The subject is very familiar to those from Routt County. The opera will be about Cookie Lockhart, the famed auctioneer, and her colorful career. Lockhart succeeded in a male-dominated field and was the first woman inducted into the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame. The opera will be called COOKIE.

Moffat County High School volleyball has open gym starting today. Sessions are from 8-11 a.m. with strength and conditioning through July and the beginning of August, leading up to tryouts.

Practices for soccer players at Moffat County High School start this Saturday. Evening practices are from 7-9 p.m. at the high school. Eighth graders are invited. Bring cleats, shin guards and water. For questions, call Nathalie Boelen at 334-703-9068.
