KRAI News for Friday, April 19, 2019

Moffat County High School Principal Kyle York is resigning at the end of the school year. He’s been the principal for two years in Craig. He and his family plan to move back to Colorado Springs for a new business venture, plus he’ll be a school administrator there as well. The search has started for a new principal at Moffat County High School. On Sunday, April 28, there will be a meet-and-greet so members of the community can meet the candidates who want to be the next principal at the high school.

Wait and see. That’s what Moffat County Sheriff KC Hume and Craig Police Chief Jerry Delong are doing, in regards to the new red flag gun bill that Governor Jared Polis signed last week. Craig City Council and Moffat County Board of County Commissioners have both passed resolutions that say they won’t support the measure. And Craig is a sanctuary city. They feel the red flag law violates the U.S. Constitution’s Second and Fourth Amendments. The law means a family member or law enforcement could petition a court to take away someone’s guns for up to 14 days, if that person is deemed to be a threat to themselves or others. The law doesn’t go into effect until Jan. 1. Local law enforcement says they’re in a holding pattern to see if the law really does go into effect in January.

That young bear that was relocated from the old town area of Steamboat Springs earlier this month, has been killed. The bear had been taken to an area north of Meeker. It destroyed a farmer’s bee hive, so Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers had to put it down. CPW wants to remind everyone to secure your trash cans so that the bears don’t become dependent on human food.

Stop by City Hall to check out the new sign out front. It’s an eight ton rock that had to be installed with help from a 25-ton crane and workers from Road & Bridge. It says Craig, City Hall, Colorado’s Great Northwest, Est. 1908. City Hall is at 300 W. 4th Street. A picture is on the KRAI Facebook page and website.

Sports today… Moffat Country swimmers are at the Jeffco Invitational today and tomorrow. The high school track team is in New Castle and the middle school athletes are at the Meeker Invitational. The bulldogs have a baseball game tomorrow in Delta. The Lady Bulldogs soccer team plays Roaring Fork at 1 p.m. tomorrow, at the high school in Craig.
