Police are warning of potential IRS scams targeting South Central Wyoming residents. Scammers who identify themselves as federal agents are calling targets directly, and are demand payment of income taxes they say are delinquent. In other incidents, people have received recorded calls that direct them to call a certain number back. The man or woman who answers the call will also identify themselves as government agents and demand money. Genuine communications from the IRS will always begin with a letter, and never a phone call. Those who actually owe federal income taxes or think they might owe, should contact the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040, to speak with a genuine official about your tax issues. If you know you don’t owe any income taxes, report the caller immediately to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, by calling 1-800-366-4484.
