I-70 Traffic Detoured Through NW Colorado

Traffic though Craig, Steamboat, Oak Creek, Hayden and Meeker will be heavy today due to a Rock slide that closed I-70 in the Glenwood Canyon. Westbound I-70 traffic will be detoured to Highway 131 from Walcott to Highway 40 at Steamboat, through Craig, then South on Highway 13 through Meeker and Rifle. Eastbound traffic will follow the same route in the opposite direction. As the rock slide occurred after dark last night the Colorado Department of Transportation had to wait until this morning to fully evaluate the extent of the damage to the roadway. They have yet to release an estimated of the time need for cleanup and repair of the damage. A closure of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon about 5 years ago lasted for days and created an economic boost to businesses along the path of the detour. Last nights rock slide was the 2nd one of the day. It followed a rather minor rock slide which occurred in the predawn hours Monday morning.  Photos of the rock slide: courtesy of CDOT.
