Due to the recent discovery of Equine Herpes in a horse that had been traveling to events around the state, the contractor that was to provide stock for the Wild West Weekend event in Craig has backed out of the event. That means there will be no PRCA bronc riding during Memorial Day Weekend in Craig. Event organizer Donnie Hayes says the contractor decided to err on the side of caution after consulting with the State Veterinarian’s Office and others. The horse that was determined to have Equine Herpes has been euthanized, and a stable mate is showing signs of the disease. The State Veterinarian’s Office has issued a warning to those holding rodeo and barrel racing events in the near future to be extremely cautious. The news hasn’t yet affected the High School Rodeo event that is also taking place in Craig Memorial Day weekend.
