A 31-year-old man was shot just after midnight Sunday on Highway 13 about 5 miles north of Rifle. The incident occurred when he stopped to offer assistance to the driver of a stopped vehicle with flashing emergency lights. As he approached the vehicle, someone inside shot him in the torso. After being shot, he returned to his vehicle and was able to drive away and call 911. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital in Rifle, then flown by flight for life to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction where he is currently on a respirator. Due to the mans medical condition, officers have not been able to interview him to gain additional details.
