Gardner Presses Importance of States’ Water Rights

gardnerSenator Cory Gardner (R-CO) announced yesterday that he has introduced an amendment to the Senate budget which would protect privately held water rights and permits from federal overreach. Gardner’s amendment would recognize the long-standing authority to manage water according to state law and protects against federal takeover of water rights and permits. The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a rule that would put all waters of the country under federal control. In a statement, Gardner said, “the ability of Coloradans to rely on state recognized water rights has been the foundation of Colorado agriculture, small business, outdoor recreation and local economies since the formation of our state in 1876.” You can see video of Gardner presenting his case to Congress below.
