Fire Closes Highway 40 Between Dinosaur and Skull Valley

U.S. Highway 40 has been closed between Dinosaur and Skull Valley (at 3:30pm Monday) because of the Dead Dog Fire burning to within ¼ mile of the highway. Rio Blanco County Road 1 is also closed and the small community of Blue Mountain is being evacuated. Fire activity has increased significantly on the Dead Dog Fire, which is now estimated to be more than 2,000 acres. It is burning 10 miles north of Rangely. Firefighters are currently battling the fire on the ground and in the air. Firefighters have been able to hold the 1,000-acre Hunter Fire 20 miles southwest of Meeker in check so far this (Monday) afternoon. Air resources are being shared between the two fires.
