A 53-year-old Grand Junction man was seriously injured Tuesday night when the dump truck he was driving crashed into an Interstate 70 bridge. At about 9:30 Tuesday night, Steven Bounds was driving a large construction dump truck on Highway 6 near Dotsero. The initial investigation has implied that the dump was in the lifted and up position when Bounds attempted to drive under the I-70 overpass, and the dump collided with the bridge. The dump immediately severed from the truck, and the truck continued after the collision with Bounds on board for about 300 feet. Bounds was transported to Vail Valley Medical Center with serious injuries and later airlifted to Denver Health, where he is listed in critical condition. Details of the crash are still under investigation. It appears as though Bounds was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The Colorado Department of Transportation responded to the scene and determined the I-70 bridge was still safe to drive on, although engineers will continue to monitor the structure’s integrity.
