Cutting Torches Cause Grass Fire

A grass fire near the Empire Mine yesterday afternoon was caused by part of the decommissioning process of the mine. Crews are currently using cutting torches to break up the metal infrastructure of the mine. High winds yesterday lead to sparks from the torches igniting a small grass fire. Craig Firefighters were called in to extinguished the fire, which burned an acre of grass. Craig Fire and Rescue Captain Kevin Kernan said crews were on scene for around half an hour dealing with the incident.
