A crash east of Rock Springs Thursday afternoon resulted in the death of 33 year old Rock Springs resident Hannah Mayfield. The crash occurred on Interstate 80 about three miles east of Rock Springs. Police say Mayfield failed to properly negotiate a right hand curve in the highway and drifted off the interstate. She overcorrected, collided with a trailer being pulled by Freightliner, and then overcorrected again, driving into the median. Once in the median, the vehicle tripped and rolled multiple times. Mayfield was ejected during the crash, as she was not wearing her seat belt, and sustained fatal injuries on scene. The driver of the Freightliner, 55 year old Memphis, Tennessee resident Michael Strayhorn, was uninjured. Alcohol use is being investigated as a contributing factor in this crash. Mayfield marks the 136th highway fatality in Wyoming for 2015. There were 135 fatalities during this same time period in 2014.
