A Craig man, who was out on bond in a Routt County drug case, was arrested on additional drug charges last month in Moffat County. 51-year-old Melvin Newton was taken into custody August 23rd, after a warrant for possession of a controlled substance was issued for his arrest. About a week earlier, Newton allegedly dropped a bag containing Methamphetamine at the east Craig Kum & Go, which a customer recovered and turned in to police. Craig Police used security footage to confirm Newton as the suspect. After he was arrested, police obtained a warrant to search his home, where they found an additional 6 grams of meth, drug paraphernalia and a significant amount of money, which led to an additional drug distribution charge. Newton was previously arrested in Hayden earlier this year after a drug-sniffing dog located 23 grams of meth in is vehicle. He was also arrested last year after he was found to be in possession of over 300 grams of methamphetamines in Moffat County. Those cases have yet to be resolved. Newton is currently in custody at the Moffat County Jail, where his bail has been set at $500,000. . Pictured Melvin Newton, photo courtesy of the Moffat County Jail, click to enlarge.
